Awards Available to Undergraduate Students

  1. A. Study Abroad Scholarships

    Milton A. Buchanan Scholarships for the

    STUDY ELSEWHERE PROGRAM

    A Buchanan Scholarship is available for students in a program offered by the Italian Department spending one or two terms at a university in Italy as part of the Study Elsewhere Program. One award of $3000 may be awarded to a student spending the whole session at an Italian university or two awards of $1,500 for each of two students spending the fall or spring term at an Italian university.

    Recipients must enroll in at least two full course equivalents in Italian during that year.

    Apply in writing to the Department by May 1, 2010.

    Students who are interested in studying in Italy under the Student Exchange Program or who are planning to take Italian courses at another university but not in Italy , should see the Undergraduate Co-ordinator well before the January deadline for applications.

     

    B. Siena Summer Program Scholarships

    Milton A. Buchanan Scholarships

    Buchanan Scholarships, in the value of $1000, are available to students in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto who are taking at least one Italian course for credit in Siena . All students applying to an ITA course will automatically be considered for these awards based on academic merit.

    Italian Scholastic Awards

    Thanks to the generous donation of the Associazione Nazionale Alpini (Sezione di Toronto) an award of $1,000 is available to a student in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto who is taking at least one Italian course for credit in Siena . All students applying to an ITA course will automatically be considered for this award based on academic merit.

    C. Highest Grade in a Course or for the Year Award

    Automatically assigned to students at the end of the academic year.

    (I) Order of the Sons of Italy of Ontario Scholarship
    Awarded to an outstanding student whose program in fourth year includes at least two courses in Italian language and literature and who has taken Italian in each of his/her preceding years at university.

    (II) The Michael Ukas Scholarship in Italian Studies
    Awarded to a student in financial need enrolled in a Major or specialist program in Italian who has successfully completed a second year course in Italian.

    (III) B.M. Corrigan Award
    One scholarship awarded to a full-time third year student with an A overall standing in that year, who ranks highest in the average mark of not less than two Italian courses, or equivalent in half courses, taken in that year, numbered 300 or above.

    One scholarship awarded to a full-time second year student with an A overall standing in that year, who ranks highest in the average mark of not less than two Italian courses, or equivalent in half courses, taken in that year, numbered 200 or above .

    (IV ) Emilio Goggio Undergraduate Scholarship in Italian Studies
    Awarded to a student in financial need who has obtained the highest mark in an introductory course in Italian language.

    (V) The John A. Grohovaz Italo-Canadian Youth Club Bursary
    Awarded to a third year full-time student enrolled in a Major, Specialist or Joint Specialist program in Italian; based on overall achievement in Italian.

    (VI) The UTICA Awards in Italian
    The University of Toronto Italian Canadian Association has generously donated $2,000 towards the establishment of undergraduate fellowships in Italian and Italian Canadian Studies.

    (VII) The Jean Arnold Tory Scholarship
    Awarded to an outstanding student enrolled in a Specialist or Major program in Italian who has completed (ITA343H,344H), formerly ITA 350Y.

    (VIII ) The Dr. Annamarie P. Castrilli Scholarship in Italian Studies
    Awarded to an outstanding student who is enrolled in a specialist or Major Program in Italian and who is involved in community service activities that benefit the Italian Canadian community of Toronto .

    (IX) The Award of the Consul-General of Italy
    Scholarship awarded to a second- or third-year student enrolled in a program offered by the Department of Italian studies.

    (X) S. Bernard Chandler Undergraduate Scholarship
    Awarded to a second-year student in the Department of Italian Studies
    on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

    D. Book Prizes

    The Ambassador of Switzerland Prizes in French, German and Italian
    One prize to an outstanding student who has taken at least three courses in the subject in which the prize is awarded (French, German and Italian).

    E. Other

    Department of Italian Studies Grant
    To be awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need to undergraduate students who are enrolled in a program in Italian Studies.
