Research Opportunity Program: ITA 299Y Courses
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM
The purpose of the Research Opportunity Program(ROP) is to provide an opportunity for students in their second year in the Faculty of Arts and Science to work in the research project of a professor in return for 299Y course credit. The Program is completely voluntary and serves to enhance the fundamental connection between teaching and research in a research-intensive university.
Through the ROP students early in their academic careers have an opportunity to become involved in original research. They can expect to learn research methods and share in the excitement and discovery of acquiring new knowledge while earning course credit towards their degree and program requirements. Also, students develop continuing relationships with faculty members who can act as mentors during their undergraduate years and assist them in applications to graduate schools or professional faculties. Professors benefit from the help and enthusiasm of specifically selected students.
To apply, please go to the following web site: http://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/current/undergraduate/course/rop. The deadline for applications is March 18th, 2009.

Prof. Franco Pierno 416/926-1300 Ext. 337
Carr Hall, Room 214
E-mail: franco.pierno@utoronto.ca
OBJECTIVES AND METHODOLOGY:
This project aims to transcribe and edit the first printed Italian translation of the Bible (Venice, 1471), of which a modern edition still does not exist. By doing so, it is hoped that this important book will be made available to a wider body of researchers in the field of History of Italian Literature and Language as well as in the field of History of Religion. Thus, part of the project will involve preparing a CD-ROM version of this text.
To reach the objective, our team will first undergo intensive training in transcription of ancient printed texts skills. Then, our team will be engaged in learning basic computer skills to use a modern and very useful special software for editing ancient texts (TUSTEP, see http://www.zdv.uni-tuebingen.de/tustep/tustep_eng.html).
NUMBER OF STUDENT PLACES AVAILABLE: 5
DESCRIPTION OF STUDENT PARTICIPATION:
Students will deal directly with the primary text to prepare a preliminary edition under my direction. Students will be credited as “research assistants” in any publications that utilize their work.
Specific skills: Good knowledge of Italian language.
