POSt Enrollment

SPECIAL NOTICE -- The Registrar's Office runs free information sessions every March about POSt Enrollment: two for Science students (Math, Physical, Life) and two for Humanities and Social Science students (including Commerce). These are specially for current first-year students but anyone can come.

What are subject POSts? Why do I need them? How do I enrol in POSts? Can I take four Specialists?!?

Answers to all of these questions - and more! - will be provided during two (2) information sessions for first-year students...

  • Computer, Math, Life & Physical Science students:
    • 8 March 2012 (4:30pm, Innis Residence Event Room)
    • 21 March 2012 (4:30pm, Innis Residence Event Room)
  • Humanities, Social Science & Commerce students:
    • 7 March 2012 (4:30pm, Innis Residence Event Room)
    • 22 March 2012 (4:30pm, Innis Residence Event Room)

Each of the two sessions for each category of student are the same -- we offer two to improve the chance there is one you can make! We hope to see you there!

If you are not able to make it to one of these sessions, we have posted our presentations here:

Computer, Life, Math & Physical Science (PowerPoint Presentation)

Humanities, Social Science, & Commerce (PowerPoint Presentation)

It is a degree requirement of the Faculty of Arts and Science that students complete programs of study. Degree students must enrol in a program or combination of programs suitable to their degree before the end of the session in which they complete their fourth credit. Failure to enrol in a Subject POSt can result in the cancellation of your registration in a subsequent academic session.

Remember, when you have achieved 4.0 credits or more, you are considered second year. So, in other words, students have to pick their programs of study (POSts) as they enter second year.

Students may complete (minimally) one of the following program requirements for their degree:

  1. One Specialist program (which includes at least one course at the 400-level); or
  2. Two Major programs, which must include 12 different courses; or
  3. One major and two minor programs, which must include 12 different courses.

Many departments give priority for course enrolment to students based on their Subject POSt enrolment. That is, some students may not be able to enrol in courses if they have not enrolled in the appropriate Subject POSt. So it is important, where possible, to apply for and enrol in your intended Subject POSts so you have easiest access to the courses you need to complete them, and your degree.

Just so you know: students can and do change their Subject POSts, sometimes after second year or even after third year. And it might be that a student might enrol in some Subject POSts after first year but only temporarily, with plans to substitute different Subject POSts later -- usually because they still need to do some courses or get certain grades to qualify.

There are, not surprisingly, a great number of Subject POSts. Some are very easy to get in -- you ask for it and you get it. Some require the program offices check your grades (or other requirements) and then let you know some time afterwards. A good starting place is the opening sections of the Registration Handbook and Timetable which talk about the different types.
