Program Highlighted | Linguistics Introduction | Professor Sali Tagliamonte, Undergraduate Linguistics Co-oridnator "Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Our program begins with a 1st year course introducing students to the foundations of the field phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and syntax and semantics as well as how language and society are intertwined. The department emphasizes current theories of language as well as the social and cultural implications of language use. We encourage students to pursue research projects at the undergraduate level and to engage with faculty's research. This equips students for subsequent graduate research; although many choose to go on in related fields such as speech pathology and education. Linguistics is also excellent preparation for any program with a strong analytic component, such as law, business administration or cognitive science. In addition to the specialist, major and minor programs, the Department also offers combined programs with language departments and Philosohy. Other Linguistics related courses are also found in other departments such as the language departments, Anthropology, Computer Science, Philosophy, and in the Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence program." Sali Tagliamonte
