Program Highlighted | French Introduction | Professor Anne-Marie Brousseau Parlez-vous français? Un petit peu? French studies offer a great variety of courses where students can progress toward the command of French language. From introductions aimed at absolute beginners to sophisticated interpretation of legal texts, from grammatical analysis to development of communication skills, our language courses are designed to suit all levels of proficiency in reading and listening, writing and speaking. But French studies mean far more than improving an accent or brushing up on grammar. They are an invitation au voyage: travel in space, travel in time. French studies are an open door to the language and culture of the Francophonie, with its 250 millions speakers of French throughout the world. They are a bridge to this other reality of our bilingual country, the culture and language of Quebecois, Franco-Ontarians and other French Canadians. They are a time travel machine that will revive the history of France, through its language and literature. They are an opportunity to live à la française, with summer programs in France and in Quebec. French studies offer ten different programs, centered on three main disciplines: language, literature, and linguistics. Two specialist programs are offered, as well as three majors (including Second Language Learning), and five minors (Translation, Cultural Studies, Media, etc.). In most programs, students are given the opportunity to keep improving their language skills in language courses, while studying topics such as Quebec Theatre, The Golden Age of the Novel, Literature in Exile, Women's Autobiographies, Syntax, Phonology, Sociolinguistics or Translation from English to French. For those who are interested in French (the culture) but do not wish to study in French (the language), we offer Cultural Studies courses taught in English.
