Introduction | Director: Professor Wendy Rotenberg

The Commerce Program at U of T is one of the oldest and most prestigious business programs in Canada. It is also one of the most competitive. Commerce has a long and distinguished history at the University of Toronto. Commerce has been taught here since the early 1900's, with the first Bachelor of Commerce class being admitted in 1920. Many students ask "What exactly is Commerce?" The Bachelor of Commerce is a four year honours degree that combines the study of economics and management. U of T Commerce has more ECO courses than most business programs.

In your economic studies, you will learn about supply and demand, pricing, consumption, and how income is distributed. You will delve into the world of international trade, inflation, banking, deficits, and much more. The strong economics component of U of T Commerce creates graduates with excellent analytical skills and a broad knowledge of the business world.

The other half of Commerce is the management discipline. This is what most students think of as the "business" courses. Here we're talking about accounting, finance, marketing, strategy, organizational behaviour, and international business. You'll study entrepreneurship, business law, e-biz, and production management.

Commerce students are recruited by firms from across Canada and around the world. Our graduates are well represented in boardrooms, small businesses, university classrooms, the courts, government ministries and various legislative bodies. Commerce graduates frequently become economists, accountants, actuaries, financial analysts, marketing analysts, managers of firms and government, or proprietors of small businesses. Some commerce students decide to pursue post-graduate studies; popular choices include law schools and MBA programs and graduate Economics.
