Program Highlighted | Architecture
Interview with | Clarence Lau

Date | June 2002

Introduction |

The Architectural Studies program introduces students to the discipline of architecture, focusing on the state of the art, current issues and emerging practices from critical, theoretical and historical perspectives. Students are provided with opportunities to learn practical, formal and analytical skills through project-based courses in design and visual communication.

Concentrations in Architectural Design or in History, Theory, Criticism are available through the Major program. First-year, introductory courses lead into a sequence of courses in architectural design and representation, history, theory and technology. An emphasis is placed on advanced theory and interdisciplinarity, since contemporary architecture is tied to knowledge and practice in urbanism, environmentalism, literature, media, cultural theory, art, science and technology, as well as philosophy, economics, and political science. Graduates of this program may apply to graduate professional programs in architecture.

The Specialist program builds on the Major with concentration in Architectural Design and is especially useful for students who wish to pursue a professional education in architecture, landscape architecture or urban design. Additional courses in design, theory, history, and building technology are included in this program. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to the professional Master of Architecture, and may be granted one year of advanced standing.
