Paying or Deferring Your Fees

Our Scholarships and Financial Aid page provides you with information on ways of funding your university education, including the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).

We have created a budget document, including some tips and a budget sheet, to help you with your financial planning for the academic year.

Paying Your Fees
The University of Toronto does not send out invoices to students. You will find your invoice, including the minimum payment to be registered, in the financial tab of your ROSI account. To be registered, you must be enrolled in courses and your minimum payment must be received by the University. You will know you are registered because your status on ROSI will be REG (registered).

The minimum first installment of your fees is due by Tuesday 20 August 2013. If you have not paid your fees by this date and do not have grounds to defer, you must pay the minimum installment and provide our office with proof of payment immediately. You can do this by emailing a screen-shot, scan, or picture of the online banking transaction or the stamped transaction receipt to registrar.innis@utoronto.ca. You can also bring the proof of payment directly to our office. If you are emailing, please put "proof of payment" in the subject line and be sure that your name, student number, and account number are all clearly visible.

Once we receive and process your proof of payment, you will be registered and your status on ROSI will change from INV (invited) to REG (registered).

If your status is not REG by the end of August you will be removed from your courses and your registration will be cancelled. If you are not sure what your current invoice balance is, you can find it under the "Financial Account" tab of your ROSI account.

Deferring Your Fees
If you are receiving OSAP and applied early on (we recommend by mid-June at the latest), you will be able to defer your fees on ROSI, a process that will register you as a student. Deferring your fees in essence allows you to register without making the usual minimum first payment, on the grounds that you have money coming in the form of student loans. To defer your fees on ROSI, click the Financial Account tab. You will find the deferral button near the bottom of the page.

If you are receiving out-of-province (non-Ontario) loans, please submit the Notice of Assessment to Enrolment Services as soon as you receive it. Once Enrolment Services has received and processed your assessment, you will be eligible to defer your fees on ROSI.

Note that deferral is only possible if you do not owe the university any money from a previous session. If you do, you must pay off your back-balance in full before you can be eligible to defer your fees. As a newly admitted student, you will only find yourself in this situation if you do not pay off your fees in full by the end of your first year.

If it is getting close to the deadline in August and you still cannot defer your fees, you can come to our office to investigate and perhaps pursue other avenues. This option may be available to you if, for example, you applied for OSAP late, or if you wish to defer for other reasons such as if you are receiving a sizeable scholarship, enough to cover the minimum first payment.

Paying the Remainder of Your Fees
If you do not initially pay your fees in full (you make only your minimum payment or you defer your fees), you should be aware that interest will begin to accrue on your outstanding balance in November. The rate of interest is 1.5% and it accrues on the 15th of every month as of 15 November.

If you are receiving OSAP, you will receive your loan in two installments: 60% of the total loan in September and the remaining 40% in January. Even if your September installment is enough to cover your fees in full, do not use it to do so. If you use all of your September installment to cover your fees in full, you will have to use whatever remains (if any money remains) to support yourself until your next installment comes in January. Remember also that your January installment is smaller than your September installment. Your two OSAP installments combined are designed to last you for the full Fall/Winter session.
