Some History
The Innis College Mentoring Discussion Groups began in 2000, a series of discussion groups on careers with Innis students and friends of the College. In April 2000, students interested in pursuing law met over lunch with Timothy Ryan (9T2), now vice-president, RBC Securities. On two separate days in March 2001, Buzz Neal and then Bernice Hines and Don Moore, members of Later Life Learning, spoke with Innis students on their careers in business and on life sciences respectively. Also in March 2001, students interested in cinema, production and business ventures, met with Jim Shedden (8T6), studio manager of Bruce Mao designs.

Three successful discussion groups were held in the 2001-2002 session. The fall term began with a lively exchange between Toshi Takishita (9T7) and Jack Geller, a distinguished lawyer who had recently retired. These guest speakers addressed questions and concerns of Innis students who were contemplating a career in law.

A social services group held in early March 2002 featured two members of Later Life Learning: Barbara Greer, a former social worker, and Barbara Killinger, a clinical psychologist whose expertise is in the area of workaholism. Both spoke of the challenges and rewards of working with individuals and groups of peole with a variety of needs. Students who were present felt encouraged to seek out volunteer experiences that would help them develop their "people" skills.

Later in March, the Registrar's Office hosted a well-attended session entitled "Words in Print and Media". Elizabeth Amer, a Later Life Learning member, spoke of her interests and accomplishments, which included editing, writing, publishing, and municipal politics, to name a few. Jennifer Macerollo (St. Michael's College, 9T8) shared advice with students on how to enter the film and television industry in Toronto. A number of students commented after the session that the concrete advice given and anecdotes shared gave them hope for developing an interesting career.
