December-January
The careful research you have been doing over the past few months has prepared you to complete and submit your university application. Completed Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) 101 application forms and fees are due on 16 January 2013. Applications sent in after this date will still be processed by OUAC, up until the final application deadline for each university or university division. You can still make changes to your OUAC application online once you have submitted it, but you will want to make them before the final application deadline of the universities to which you are applying.
When you are applying to the University of Toronto, and if you are interested in the Faculty of Arts and Science on the St. George campus, you need to pay particular attention to your admission category. The Faculty of Arts and Science offers a wide variety of programs and students are grouped and admitted based on the category into which most of their intended programs fall.
- Life Sciences: biology, ecology, immunology, psychology, zoology, etc.
- Physical and Mathetmatical Sciences: actuarial science, astronomy and astrophysics, mathematics, physics, statistics, etc.
- Humanities: aboriginal studies, history, international relations, languages, philosophy, etc.
- Social Sciences: anthropology, economics, employment relations, environmental geography, sociology, etc.
- Rotman Commerce: accounting, finance and economics, management, commerce
- Computer Science: computer science (artificial intelligence, software engineering, etc.), human-computer interaction, computer science and economics, etc.
Questions about academic programs can be directed to the Recruitment Office in the Faculty of Arts and Science or to the relevant individual departments.
You must know into which admission category your preferred program(s) fall(s) because you will need to have the high school pre-requisites for your category in order to be considered for admission. Your application will be considered based on the pool of applicants who are also applying to your category. Admission averages and scholarship cutoffs may vary from one category to another.
If it seems daunting to you to make a decision now that will affect the next four or more years of your life, there is no need to panic. As long as you have the pre-requisites for your new area of interest, you can change programs once you have begun your undergraduate career at the University of Toronto.
Once you have chosen your Faculty, campus, and admissions category, you are ready to begin your OUAC application form for the University of Toronto.
The final piece that you need to complete your application is your college choice, ranked in order of your preference. If you really want to be a member of a particular college, be sure to put that college first on your list. There are a variety of ways in which you can learn about the college system in the Faculty of Arts and Science:
- Look at each college's website
- Review the Faculty of Arts and Science's College Brochure
- Come and visit the colleges in person if you live close enough
- Read Understanding the College System
- Take a look at Innis' student-run web service that offers advice on everything about life at the University of Toronto from a student perspective. Called askastudent, it has dealt with the question of college selection many times and even has an entire page devoted to this issue.
If you are an Ontario secondary school student, you can make changes to your college choice on OUAC until 22 February 2013.
