Book Launch, Interview and Q&A with Jeff Rubin (BA 1977 INNIS), award winning author, economist, and former Chief Economist and Managing Director, CIBC World Markets. on May 30, 2012, Jeff Rubin launched his 2nd book, The End of Growth with a packed Town Hall. Edwin Boyd Screening with CSI alumna Allison Black (producer). On May 10, 2012, Innis College welcomed back Cinema Studies alumna Allison Black and U of T alumnus Nathan Morlando (Director/Writer). A screening of Edwin Boyd, which won the Skyy VodkaAward for Best Canadian First Feature at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, was hosted by the Innis College and Cinema Studies Institute Alumni Networks. Following the screening, Filmmaker Patricia Rozema moderated a Q&A with producer Allison Black, director Nathan Morlando, and Kevin Durand who played Lenny Jackson in the film. The Etiquette Advantage in Business for Young Alumni. Etiquette expert Natalie Jikerjian hosted a business etiquette workshop for graduating students and young alumni. The workshop included tips on dining etiquette, workplace etiquette, and cultural understandings for international global business relationships.
Payback: Screening and Q&A with Filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal. On Thursday, March 15, 2012, the Innis Alumni Network, Cinema Studies Institute, and Mongrel Media co-hosted a free screening of Payback -filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal's most recent project. This feature documentary, based on Margaret Atwood’s bestselling book Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth, offers a fascinating look at debt as a mental construct and traces how it influences relationships, societies, governing structures and the fate of the planet. CSI Professor Corinn Columpar hosted an engaging Q&A with Jennifer Baichwal. View the film's trailer.
An Evening with Deepa Mehta. On Tuesday, November 1, 2011, Innis College and the Cinema Studies Institute hosted "An Evening with Deepa Mehta" for alumni,friends, students, and the wider community. Dr. Mehta, who received an honorary degree from U of T on November 7th, shared clips from her current project, "Midnight's Children". READ
Jay Bahadur on The Pirates of Somalia. On October 27, 2011, Innis College alumnus Jay Bahadur (HBA 2007) presented on his recent book, The Pirates of Somalia: Inside Their Hidden World. Jay spoke of his time in Somalia, his experiences with the Somalian pirates, and his findings. The presentation was followed by a Q&A with the audience and a book signing. Read more about his book.
Town Hall Campaign Launch Event with Screening of “Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project”. On October 12, 2011, Innis College and the Cinema Studies Institute launched the Town Hall fundraising campaign with the screening of “Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project” directed by U of T alumnus Barry Avrich. The screening was followed by a panel discussion with Barry Avrich, Director; and President, Endeavour Marketing; Richard Crouse, Film Critic; Bryan Gliserman, President, Entertainment One Films Canada; and Peter Howell, Film Critic, Toronto Star. Cinema Studies Professor Corinn Columpar moderated the lively and engaging discussion. More than 150 alumni, friends, donors, students, and faculty and staff attended the event. Finding the Words Book Launch. On June 9th, the Innis College Alumni Network and the Department of English co-hosted a book launch event for Finding the Words in which thirty-one well-known writers share deeply personal discoveries and stories that surprise, delight, and stir the mind and heart. The event featured editor Jared Bland (HBA 2003 Innis; MA English), and contributing authors Stacey May Fowles, Guy Gavriel Kay, and Michael Winter (U of T's 2011 Writer-in-Residence). Proceeds from the sale of the book go to PEN Canada in support of its vital work in defence of freedom of expression and on behalf of writers around the world who have been silenced.
Who Cares About 15 Million Voters? The Innis College Urban Studies Program co-hosted a panel discussion on Thursday, April 14th, 2011 with the Martin Prosperity Institute, the Cities Centre, and the School of Public Policy and Governance. The panel was moderated by CBC Radio's Metro Morning host Matt Galloway and included panelists: Julia Deans (CEO, Greater Toronto Action Alliance), Fred Eisenberger (President and CEO, Canadian Urban Institute), and Richard M. Sommer (Dean, John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design). Read the recently published report of the same title. Backpack to Briefcase- Three Things: The final 2010/2011 Backpack to Briefcase event included U of T alumni guest speakers: Barri Cohen (CSI), Filmmaker, writer, publisher & TV producer; Neil Guthrie (English), Partner and National Director of Research, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP;and, Tenio Evangelista (History), Vice President, Borealis Infrastructure. The Imperfectionists Book Launch Jan 2011: The Innis Alumni Network and the Cinema Studies Institute hosted CSI alumnus Tom Rachman's Toronto book launch of his debut novel "The Imperfectionists". Read a recent Toronto Star article on Tom and his novel.
Screening of Barney's Version: On November 22, 2010, the Innis Alumni Network and the Cinema Studies Institute hosted a free screening of Barney's Version for Cinema Studies students and the U of T community. The screening was followed by a Question & Answer with Producer Robert Lantos (moderated by Professor Charlie Keil, Director, Cinema Studies Institute). Read More.
A Wine Tasting: Sommelier Kirstyn Wightman led a group of alumni and upper year students through a tour of wines from Australia to Italy, to California. Starting off with a refreshing Australian Sauvignon Blanc, the tasting ended with a beautifully paired Italian Prosecco and Tiramisu. Salut and Bon Appetit!
Backpack to Briefcase: Backpack to Briefcase -the first in a series of 3 events was hosted by the Cinema Studies Institute and the Cinema Studies Student Union in October 2010. Cinema Studies students and young alumni were invited to attend a panel discussion with Cinema Studies alumni: Theresa Scandiffio, Manager, Adult Learning, TIFF; James Shedden, Project Manager, Publications and Special Projects, AGO; Sarah Barmak, Freelance Journalist; Sarah Lawless, Producer, CBC. Mayoral Debate: The debate, hosted by Innis College's Urban Studies Program and U of T's Cities Centre and moderated by Toronto Star publisher John Cruickshank, enjoyed a packed house with 250+ people in attendance. Young Alumni Spring Reunion Event: Innis College young alumni were invited to celebrate Spring Reunion at a cocktail reception hosted by the Alumni Office. The reception was held at Bar Italia on College Street, and was DJ'd by Innis alumnus Michel Brack (Som Bomb DJ). View pictures.
Business Etiquette for Today: Protocol and Etiquette Consultant Leanne Pepper guided Innis College graduating students and young alumni through a comprehensive workshop on Business Etiquette. The workshop included tips on how to network and 'work' the room, how to exchange business cards, and how to make a good first impression. The workshop also offered tips on small talk, appropriate attire, email etiquette, and phone etiquette.
Lesra Martin and The Power of A Promise: Innis College alumnus Lesra Martin (BA 1988) is most famous for aiding in the fight to release boxer Rubin"Hurricane" Carter who was wrongly imprisoned for murder and served over 20 years in prison. Lesra spoke to students, alumni, and friends about his experiences and lessons from his journey from illiteracy to becoming a lawyer. Proceeds from admission were donated to Doctors Without Borders, and proceeds from book sales were donated to the Innis College Scholarship Fund.
An Evening with Jeff Rubin : Innis College alumnus Jeff Rubin spoke to a packed Innis Town Hall on November 30, 2009. Mr. Rubin addressed a number of issues he talks about in his bestselling book, Why Your World Is About to Get A Whole Lot Smaller: Oil and The End of Globalization.
