Later Life Learning Scholarship Exceeds $1 Million Fundraising Goal

Innis College is pleased to announce that the Later Life Learning Scholarship Fund has reached and exceeded its $1 million scholarship goal in support of Innis College students.
Later Life Learning (LLL) is an independent, educational program that offers retirees university-level courses held in Town Hall at Innis College. The LLL Scholarship Program recognizes the outstanding achievements of Innis College students and provides essential financial support to students who may otherwise not afford a university education. Since its establishment in 1985, the LLL Scholarships have been awarded to over 700 Innis College students.

With an endowment of over $1.1 million, the LLL scholarship program will support over 40 annual student scholarships, in perpetuity.

“Investing in our students today is an investment in the future,” says Principal Janet Paterson. “The generosity of our Later Life Learning friends has helped establish the College’s single largest scholarship program.  This gift will have a tremendous impact on our students for generations to come.  Thank you to all current and former LLL board members and volunteers, and to the hundreds of Later Life Learning scholarship donors for their generosity and support.”

As part of its ongoing dedication to learning, LLL has made an incredible commitment to helping Innis students.  “The motto for Later Life Learning is ‘Great Minds, Giving Hearts’,” says LLL President Norma Wiens. “Our members believe in the value of lifelong educational pursuits. Those who can, give generously to support young Innis College students who are beginning their journeys of a lifetime of learning.” LLL Scholarship recipient Darryl Hoving is one of the College’s top graduating students. His focus on academics took him to Hamburg, Germany in the summer of 2011 where he studied alongside a U of T Chemistry professor. “While many use the saying ‘time is money’, it is equally true (for a student at least) that money is time.  Financial aid allows me to focus on all the different aspects of university life, including the ability to take advantage of opportunities like my work abroad,” says Darryl.

Scholarships are a top priority of Innis College and the University of Toronto. Currently, 30 per cent of Innis College students require some level of financial assistance during their university career.

Generosity from alumni and friends allow the College to not only support students with financial restraints but also to recognize and reward students for their incredible achievements and outstanding leadership skills. “A strong scholarship program allows Innis to continue to recruit the most talented and promising students to the College and its academic programs,” says Principal Paterson.
