SPSS is a powerful, feature-rich, statistical analysis program. It is used in a wide variety of disciplines. Its menu-driven system for selecting various statistical analyses and report writing make it a favourite for many instroductory statistics courses. Students can focus on statistics instead of spending time writing program code.
On-line software activation requried on all versions of SPSS. All versions of SPSS from the UofT Licensed Software Office must be renewed annually.

SPSS can now be purchased and downloaded on the new LSO online store at software.utoronto.ca. Currently registered students, active faculty and staff are eligible to use this store for all individual software purchases. Just go to software.utoronto.ca and log in with your UTORid and password. Access is restricted to UofT IP addresses. UTORvpn can be used to access the website off-campus. Please note that UTORvpn is only available to staff, faculty, and graduate students.
Alternatively, you the software can be purchased at our storefront. No order form is required. We accept cash, debit, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. Bring your TCard with you to the Licensed Software Office to purchase and pickup, Mon.-Fri., 9:30-12:30; 1:30- 5:00.

Q: When installing IBM SPSS on my Mac, I click the icon on the desktop to start the installation, the installer appears to do something and then disappears. How can I install it?
A: Copy the contents of the CD to your desktop. You can now install SPSS from there. Delete the copied content after installation.
Q: Which version of IBM SPSS for Windows should I purchase? The 32-bit or 64-bit version?
A: The 32-bit version will install on both 32 and 62 bit versions of Windows. The 64-bit version will only install on 64-bit versions of Windows.
The 64-bit version will work better with large data sets if you have more than 4GB of RAM. If using ODBC access, this should also be taken into consideration when choosing which version to purchase.

Q: How do I renew SPSS?
A: Renewing your SPSS license on a previously installed version of SPSS involves the use of the Authorization Wizard. Please ensure that you are connected to the internet before attempting to renew your SPSS license.
To use the Authorization Wizard:
- Enter the Start Menu and select Programs->SPSS.
- Select the Authorization Wizard.
- When prompted, chose License my product now and enter your authorization code.
If the authorization wizard is not easily accessible, it is possible to renew your SPSS license using batch mode.
To Authorize using Batch Mode:
- Access the SPSS or SPSS Inc. folder from the C:/Program Files directory.
- Locate the spssactivator.exe file. Do not double-click the file.
- Go to the Start menu and select Run.
- Type cmd in the box to open a command window.
- Type dir spssa* into the command window and ensure that the spssactivator.exe file is listed.
- Type spssactivator [authorization code] without the brackets and follow any prompts that appear.
To check that your SPSS has successfully been renewed:
- Enter SPSS and select File->New->Syntax
- Type show license. (ensure you include the period)
- Highlight and run the command by clicking on the right pointing arrow at the top of the syntax window.
This process will allow you to view the expiration date for your license.
