The Central European University in Budapest, Hungary
This exchange is open to MA and PhD students who have a record of academic excellence. The successful candidates will spend one semester (September-December or January-April) studying at the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest. The Hungarian Studies Program will provide some financial support on a case-by-case basis. Students pay their regular tuition to the University of Toronto; they do not pay any additional tuition or incidental fees to the CEU.
The CEU is an international institution for postgraduate study and research. Founded by Hungarian-American philanthropist George Soros in 1991, the CEU also promotes educational development and policy making throughout Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The CEU has a charter from the Board of Regents of the State of New York. Beginning with 100 students in its first year in Prague (1991), the CEU has grown rapidly. During the 2008/09 academic year, enrolment stood at more than 1500 students drawn from nearly 100 countries, the majority of those from Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. More than 100 professors from 30 countries teach at the CEU. In addition, prestigious visiting professors give frequent lectures and seminars at the university, thus giving students access to highly respected academics from top-level institutions in Europe and North America. The language of instruction at the CEU is English.
To apply, please send a Statement of Purpose (up to 750 words), which details your research interests and why you would like to study at the CEU, two letters of reference from individuals who are qualified to judge your academic achievements, and all university transcripts. Letters of reference and transcripts should be sent directly from the referee and institution to CERES. Applications should be received in full at the above address by February 1, 2012. Applications received after this date will not be considered. For further information, contact Prof. Robert Austin; email: robert.austin@utoronto.ca.
