The Harold Innis Research Foundation
Harold Adams Innis (1894-1952) was and continues to be one of Canada's foremost scholars. As professor of Political Economy at the University of Toronto, Innis gained international prominence as a teacher, researcher, writer, and University statesman. He left a legacy of information and theory that has significantly influenced the study of economics, history, geography, politics, communications, and culture in Canada and beyond.
In 1969 some of his friends, colleagues, and former students formed the Harold Innis Research Foundation (HIRF) with two principal aims: to foster scholarly research relating to the work and thoughts of Harold Innis; and to assist Innis College in the achievement of its educational objectives. In pursuit of these aims, HIRF focuses on the following three areas of interest:
The Innis Memorial Lecture: Annually presented at the Innis College Town Hall in November. Past lecturers include John Ralston Saul, Linda McQuaig, Rick Salutin and Irshad Manji.
The Innis Research Bulletin: This on-line Bulletin serves as a voice for, and a source of information about, a growing Innisian research network.
The Harold Innis Research Foundation Awards Program: Open to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Toronto, the HIRF Awards are designed to foster and extend an interest in the works of Harold Innis.
