Director's Welcome
Jeffrey G. Reitz

Welcome to Ethnic, Immigration and Pluralism Studies at the University of Toronto!

Director Jeffrey G. Reitz

Our program aims to serve as a focal point for the study of ethnic and race relations across a range of disciplines and professional fields at the University of Toronto.  As Program Director since 1999, I have witnessed a tremendous gain of interest in the field in general, and in the Graduate Collaborative Program in Ethnic and Pluralism Studies in particular. It’s no wonder; the university has a wealth of resources related to such issues as: indigenous peoples, immigration, nationalism, cultural and linguistic groups, ethnic communities, and inter-group attitudes and relations. Each of these has impacts across a range of institutions – in employment and the economy, education, health and social services, local communities, politics and government, and in regional and international relations. The result is a comprehensive pool of specialized knowledge and experience doing justice to the complexities involved in considering the "Canadian mosaic," parallel issues in other countries, and across the globe. Today there is a great need for more understanding of these issues in the making of policy, and the possibilities for the application of future research are exciting indeed!

This website has been developed to provide information about relevant resources of the university, and the range of activities sponsored by our program.  Our aim is to "spread the word" as widely as possible and provide you with full and up-to-date information. Read about upcoming conferences, lectures, and other events, and keep abreast of cutting-edge research. Please explore the site also to learn about program requirements, application procedures, collaborating departments and faculties, course lists, and participating faculty. The site is updated regularly. If you have an interest in the field of ethnic and race relations, bookmark this site and visit often. If you have new information to contribute, please let us know!

Feel free to contact either myself or our Program Administrator if you have any questions about either the Graduate Collaborative Program in Ethnic and Pluralism Studies, or other aspects of ethnic, immigration, and pluralism studies at the University of Toronto: ethnic.studies@utoronto.ca or 416-978-4783.
