STUDENT EXCHANGES: TARTU UNIVERSITY AND THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO
The Estonian Studies Program is privileged to have access to a long-standing student exchange program between Tartu University and the University of Toronto. In the last five years, several promising upper-level undergraduate and Master’s students in the humanities and social sciences have spent a year at the University of Toronto. In academic year 2004-2005 two University of Toronto students will be studying in Tartu. The Chair of Estonian Studies has participated in the selection of students and has provided hospitality and academic advice to participants in the exchange.
Candidates must be either completing an undergraduate program or graduate program at their respective institution. Participants are required to complete at least one full year of full-time university studies prior to participation in the exchange.
Candidates are selected by their home institution, and are then considered for admission as non-degree special students by the host institution. Candidates must satisfy admission requirements for special student status, including language proficiency requirements, of the host institution.
TUITION AND FEES
Participants in the exchange will pay tuition and compulsory incidental fees for their respective program at the home institution prior to departure for the host institution.
Pending approval of their choice of courses
by the host institution, and provided that courses are completed with
a satisfactory grade, students are guaranteed credit at their home institution
for the work completed in the exchange year. At the end of the academic
year, participants request a transcript to be sent to their home institution
for the purpose of transfer of credit.
OPPORTUNITIES OF INTEREST FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS AT TARTU UNIVERSITY
The Prometheus Program on Transition Studies offered by the EuroCollege at the University of Tartu is an interdisciplinary, one-semester program for undergraduate social science students from around the world. The program focuses on transition experiences in Central and Eastern Europe, the post-Soviet transformation in Russia, and the changes and reforms shaping the future of the European Union.
The Program offers a unique opportunity to study transition issues at one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe (see the website below) and to acquire a first-hand experience of the historical transition that Estonia is living through. For the last ten years Estonia has undergone an incredible transformation from a Soviet republic into one of Eastern Europe’s most successful reformers and a front-runner candidate for EU and NATO membership. We believe our history and connection to both Europe and Russia provide a unique setting for students to better understand the challenges of transition in general, and the trends that are currently shaping Europe, Eastern Europe, and Russia.
Besides extensive coursework conducted entirely in English the Program also offers study trips to neighbouring countries including Russia, Scandinavia, and the Baltic Republics.
