Organization Profile Kaunas University of Technology is one of the largest and most outstanding higher schools in the country. It contains 11 faculties, an International Studies Centre, 6 institutes, 58 departments, 14 centers of science and technology, 62 training and 18 research laboratories, a secondary school (gymnasium), and other subdivisions in Kaunas District and the city of Panevezys. The total building area owned by the University comprises 223680 sq. m. There are 20 branches of study for Bachelor's and Master's students. Specialized professional study programmes offer 31 specialties for those seeking specialized diplomas. For Doctoral students, the University offers 17 branches of scientific study. At the beginning of 1997, total staff at KTU numbered 2984, of which 974 were pedagogues and researchers: 103 Professors and Habilitated Doctors, 528 Associate Professors, 208 Senior Assistants, 135 Assistants, and a great number of research staff. KTU scientists take part in both international and local programmes, perhaps most intensively in the TEMPUS programme, financed by the European Union and supporting the reorganization of higher education in Central and Eastern Europe. Out of 11 such projects carried out by KTU. KTU scientists participate in the INCO-COPERNICUS, FRAMEWORK-IV, ESPRIT, and COST research programmes. The University has signed 30 agreements of cooperation with various foreign institutions, according to which joint research and student exchange are carried out. KTU established Innovation Center for SME's (http://ediaclit.vtk.ktu.lt/idc_1.htm) Especially productive and friendly relations exist between KTU and the Scandinavian countries. The name of KTU is well-known in the Swedish Linchoping, Lund, Gioteborg, and Stockholm Royal Technological universities, as well as in Iceland (Reykjavik) and Norway (Trodheim and Osle). KTU actively cooperates with Danish Technical University, Roskild University, and various Danish firms. Good relations also exist with German, American, English, and French colleagues as well as with those in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The University has signed agreements with La Maine University in France, London City University and Wales University in the United Kingdom, SUNY Farmingdale in New York (USA), Mikel Polytechnical Institute in Finland, Danish Technical University, and other institutions. KTU is a member of the European and Baltic State Universities Rectors' Council, and takes part in the Association of Technical Universities of the Baltic States (ATUBS). Kaunas University of Technology has some experience for using the Internet in the education process. The teaching materials of courses related to software engineering, lecturers notes, tasks for practical exercises are available via the Internet. Electronic design CAD Laboratory can be called as Distance Laboratory. An experimentation environment for the remote design of digital circuits was built. The Computer Centre of KTU includes operating centre of Academic Network LITNET of Lithuania (http://www.litnet.lt/), Regional Distance Education Centre and Network of Video Conferences (http://elinara.ktu.lt/) offers various retraining short courses of different levels and duration. Those courses provide the opportunity to improve competency and qualification skills, they give necessary theoretical background and practical application.
