Dental Research Institute (DRI)

Institute theme: Diagnostic & Therapeutic Technologies

Research in this theme is focused on caries risk testing, fluorine studies, computer based data management, digital radiography and imaging technique. Novel research initiatives are being undertaken in the area of micro-analysis of saliva as a diagnostic; volumetrics/teleradiography for diagnosis; image-based dental records and distant health care delivery strategies.

There are 10 investigators participating in activities related to this theme with an emphasis on clinical and applied research (90%) and some activity in basic science (10%). Distant diagnostics using teleradiography is a key interest and strength being developed.

The names of investigators who are members of the Graduate Department of Dentistry and who are currently supervising M.Sc. and/or Ph.D. students are indicated with an asterisk (*).

Investigators

P. Birek
Development and testing of a slow release antibiotic device for treatment of periodontal infections. Clinical trials in implant dentistry. His current interest is in dental imaging and its use in Surgical Implant Training. This led to the development of the “Near Real Time Imaging” concept. Recent work was completed in non-invasive measurements of bone height around dental implants and development of a “de novo” instrument for this purpose.

S. Friedman *
Comparative testing of materials and clinical procedures commonly used in endodontic therapy.

M. Glogauer *
Development of novel oral rinse assays to monitor susceptibility to infections, periodontal disease status and bone marrow engraftment in the Bone Marrow Transplant Setting

C. Kilmartin
Prevention of infective endocarditis and relationship of dentally induced bacteraemias to development of disease.

G. Kulkarni *

H. Limeback *
Clinical studies on the prevention of dental caries. Oral health, aspiration pneumonia in the institutionalized elderly.

J. McComb *

C.G. Petrikowski *
Clinical application of computer technologies and digital radiographic imaging and their use in quantifying alveolar bone loss.

M.J. Pharoah *
Application of imaging technologies to solve diagnostic problems, specifically the evaluation of the accuracy of radiologic and other imaging techniques.

P. Santerre *
