The Access to Care Fund          Helping Patients change their lives

Every time she ate, she had to remove her 40 year-old dentures-- they were just too painful.

He fell at work, losing his job and his dental benefits.

After saving up for periodontal treatment, she had to cancel when her husband lost his job.

Recently divorced, she struggles to afford dental care for her daughter and elderly mother.

But because of donors like you, their treatments and many others were actually completed through the Access to Care Fund at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry.

We treat over 15,000 patients annually in the Faculty’s clinics. Patients come to us in pain and in need of emergency dental care – and we provide dental services at a much lower cost than most private practices. But many of our patients face financial hardship that causes them to discontinue treatment, accept minimal treatment or refuse preventive treatment simply because they cannot afford it.

It’s heartbreaking, but true — we see patients daily who face impossible choices: receiving essential dental treatment or providing food and shelter for their family.

Appropriate dental care can and does change lives. A patient who arrives holding his hand in front of his mouth, will complete treatment and emerge a confident, changed person. But in too many cases, there aren’t happy endings because patients have to refuse simple treatment that would have transformed their lives – simply because they couldn’t afford it.

Over 15,000 patients receive treatment in the Faculty’s dental clinics. 80% of our patients do not have dental insurance and 75% live on a family income of less than $40,000 a year.

That is why we have launched The Access to Care Fund.

With your help, we can make state-of-the-art oral health care available to more of our financially challenged patients. Your support also helps students get more clinical experience and the good feeling of making a life changing contribution to the health and wellbeing of people in our community.

The fund enables patients to make essential treatment decisions based solely on what is best for them, so they can live with the wellness and dignity that comes from excellent dental care.
