The Dictionary of Canadian Biography

CD-ROM

In 2000 a CD-ROM version of the DCB/DBC, which contained the first 14 volumes in English and French, was produced thanks to funding from the Millennium Bureau of Canada, the National Post and Hollinger Inc., and Historica. Some 13,000 copies were distributed free of charge to public libraries and educational institutions (middle schools, high schools, colleges, CEGEPs, and universities) across the country. This product was enthusiastically welcomed.

The compact disc presents the biographies, with their bibliographies, from the first 14 volumes of the DCB/DBC largely as they appear in the printed version, published over the course of more than 30 years, from 1966 to 1998. (The biographies from volumes I and II are the versions that appear in the volumes that were reprinted with corrections in 1979 and 1982.) Some additional corrections have been made to eliminate obvious typographical errors, to reconcile the English and French versions of the biographies, and to adjust those texts for which corrected information was published in a subsequent volume. It has not, however, been possible to undertake a full revision of the volumes, though the DCB/DBC hopes to be able to do so in the future.
