James Scarth Gale Translation Prize

The CSK hosts the James Scarth Gale Translation Prize of Cdn $2500 for non-fiction pieces of writing on Korea. The objective of this award is to promote, and make public, materials useful for teachers of undergraduate courses on modern Korea.

Submissions of translations for this year’s competition round must be received at the CSK by October 1, 2010 and should include three copies of the translation and one copy of the original text. Translations should be from 10-35 pages (double spaced, twelve point font) and based on texts written during Korea’s long twentieth century, defined as 1894 to the present. Possible translations include academic essays, series of newspaper articles, magazine features, or original archival sources, to name a few. A committee of CSK members will make the selection based on the following criteria:

• pedagogical value for undergraduate teaching
• quality of translation
• availability of similar texts in English

All translations should be submitted with the understanding that, if selected, the translations will be posted on the CSK website for public use. The translation prize is open to all members of the public.
