What is the Collaborative Master's Program in South Asian Studies?
The Collaborative Master's Program in South Asian Studies is offered by the Centre for South Asian Studies, in collaboration with the graduate departments of Anthropology, English, History, Geography, the Centre for the Study of Religion and the Faculty of Social Work. (Please note: There is no collaboration with the Department of Political Science at the Master's level.) Students applying to one of these home graduate units listed above may be eligible to also enroll in the Collaborative Program in South Asian Studies. The Collaborative Program is designed for students who wish to acquire a nuanced understanding of this region as a secondary area of specialization in addition to pursuing graduate studies in their home graduate unit. Upon completion, students will receive a degree from their home unit and a notation on their transcript indicating that they have completed the Collaborative Program in South Asian Studies.
The focus of this program is necessarily broad in that it provides students with an understanding of ancient and modern history, social change, economic development, contemporary politics, religious traditions, literary culture, and a spectrum of related topics. In addition, Master's students will have the opportunity to interact with a number of specialists in the field and also participate in several academic seminars.
How Do I Apply?
Students wishing to be admitted in the Collaborative Program must apply to one of the units listed below (a home unit). A supplementary application form must be submitted to the Centre for the South Asian Studies. The application form can also be downloaded as a PDF here.

Applicants should select a home unit based on academic interests and background preparation. You must qualify to be enrolled in both the home unit and the Centre for South Asian Studies to be eligible to participate in the Collaborative Program. In your application to the home unit, please indicate that you are also applying to the Collaborative Master's Program in South Asian Studies. There are no prerequisites for entry at the Master's level.
What are the application deadlines?
Please check your home unit's application deadline. There is no application deadline for the collaborative program.
Please note that the Centre will not be able to offer admission to the Collaborative Program unless the student is admitted to the home unit.
What are the program requirements?
Students enrolled in the Collaborative Program are required to satisfy the degree requirements of both the home unit and the Collaborative Program. The Collaborative Program degree requirements include:
- A half-year (January to April) interdisciplinary core course entitled Issues in South Asian Studies (SAS 2004H). The course will be taught by faculty members from participating home units. This is a mandatory course that all students enrolled in the Collaborative Program will be required to complete. Please check with the home unit to ensure that the core course can be taken in lieu of one of the courses required by the home unit.
- Attendance at the visiting lecture series organized by the Centre. Typically the Centre organizes 4 or 5 lectures given by experts in different aspects of South Asian Studies. Master's students are required to attend the lecture during the year that they take the core course.
- Master's students writing a thesis must include a significant South Asian component in their dissertation.
How long does the program take?
The minimum period for completing the Collaborative Master's program for full-time students is normally 12 months.
