Type of Research:
- Physiologic studies in respiratory diseases
- Mechanisms of a ventilator-induced lung injury (physiologic
and cellular/molecular studies in collaboration with other investigators).
- Lung injury in the context of transplantation (physiologic and
cellular/molecular studies in collaboration with other investigators).
Description of Research Program:
- Basic physiologic studies related to airway physiology, lung
mechanics and heart-lung interactions.
- Ventilator-induced lung injury: examination of the mechanisms
by which mechanical ventilation can induce lung injury. Models
used include whole animals, ex vivo lung perfusion systems, ex
vivo non-perfused systems, and in vitro cell models. There is
close collaboration with a number of other investigators into
the cellular/molecular aspects of this problem.
- Mechanisms of lung injury during lung transplantation: My laboratory
works very closely with Dr. Keshavjee and the thoracic surgery
laboratory. Questions being addressed include the effect of ischemia-reperfusion
on lung injury, mechanisms of bronchiolitis obliterans. We are
developing gene therapy approaches to these problems.
Research Rotation Length: Minimum rotation - 6
months
