2010-11

Gabriella Utreras

Gabriella Utreras began her undergraduate studies at the University of King’s College in Halifax, NS. There, she successfully completed the Foundation Year Program, an interdisciplinary program integrating history, literature and philosophy. She is currently entering her 3rd year at Trinity College at the University of Toronto working towards a double major in International Relations and French Literature. As such, many of her courses range from global politics, international economics and history of Canadian foreign relations to linguistics, literary theory and contemporary French literature. Last year she worked as a CPHS research assistant, which afforded her the opportunity to conduct preliminary research on long-term trends in inequity in health and in the use of health services among children in Canada and other high-income countries, under the direction of Sara Allin a postdoctoral fellow working with CPHS. Also, for the past two summers she worked as an administrative and outreach assistant at Catholic Crosscultural Services, a nonprofit settlement agency, and engaged in basic research on Results Based Accountability focusing specifically on organizational learning, outcome indicators and implementing practical measurement strategies in settlement service agencies.

After completing her undergraduate degree she plans to apply to law school for International Law in hope of continuing her study of International Relations with an emphasis on Forced Migration, Global politics and Human Rights.

2009-10

Susan Hwang

Susan Hwang is a first year undergraduate student at the University of Toronto. She is planning to major in International Relations and go to law school upon graduation. She has particular interests in traveling and learning new languages and hopes to study abroad during her undergraduate years. She aims to incorporate her passion for safe water and sanitation into her future career, hopefully working in the government or an international organization. Outside of class, she is involved with the University of Toronto Student Union, Rotaract Club, UTConnect, and North American Model UN Conference.

Farhana Rahman

Farhana Rahman is a third-year student studying International Relations and Peace and Conflict Studies. She is also in the process of completing a Language Citation in Arabic. Farhana's research interests are in violence and human rights issues in the developing world, with a particular focus on women's issues. This led her to spend the summer of 2009 as a research intern in Bangladesh at the world's largest NGO, BRAC, with the organization's Human Rights and Legal Services Programme where she analyzed the increasing trends in violations of women's human rights in rural Bangladesh. She hopes to pursue graduate work in the areas of International Development and Human Rights, and has a goal of returning to Africa where she lived for 10 years, to pursue development work. Outside of academics, Farhana is actively involved with several campus groups such as the G8 Research Group, the Muslim Students Association, the Toronto Globalist, and Peace by PEACE.

Gabriella Utreras

Gabriella Utreras is a second year French Literature major at the University of Toronto who is planning to enter the International Relations Program once she obtains all her prerequisites. Besides her love of political science, immigration policy, history and French, she is fascinated by philosophy. In fact, she spent an amazing first year at the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she completed the Foundation Year Program and where she fell in love with Plotinus, Descartes, Aquinas, Schiller, Kant, Sartre, Spinoza and countless other great minds of the human civilization. Outside of school, Gabriella also works alongside her family in missionary work and volunteer work with Mexican seasonal agricultural workers in the Holland Marsh area, usually giving Basic English lessons while they teach her how to play soccer. Gabriella hopes to continue into law school after graduating but for the meanwhile she is content with taking in the small delights of earthly wonders and enjoying a few jam sessions with her brothers.

Calvin Zhong

Calvin Zhong is a second year undergraduate student at the University of Toronto. He has yet to find a single subject that he would be confident to proclaim lifetime devotion. He decides, however, that he should not starve himself in the future by doing nothing but contemplating different subject posts during his university life. Hence, after some passionate struggle and following where the whim takes him, he is now in pursuit of a specialist degree in Actuarial Science, hoping to turn it into a career of professional actuary. A nice way to say this is Calvin is well-rounded. This observation has some validity at least. Calvin baffles only when a truly advanced mathematical theory is presented without explanation. He enjoys music and literature in general. Also, he is very fond of competitive sports like basketball, squash or badminton. Last year, Calvin took some time to teach piano at a local community centre (Yonge Street Mission); and became a junior editor for a university quarterly publication (Footprint). He is now striving to add a new language to his asset and to earn enough money for a piano at home.

2006-7

Vivian Mak

Vivian Mak is a third year undergraduate student at the University of Toronto. She is majoring in Ethics, Society and Law, and Criminology, and plans to go to law school after graduating. Vivian loves to travel and has a special interest in missionary work. She spent the summer of 2005 teaching English in China and plans to return to Asia in the summer of 2007. Her personal goal is to visit all of the continents before she turns 25 years old. Vivian is also a self-confessed coffee addict and is committed to keeping the Second Cup in business.

Nadia O'Brien

Nadia O'Brien is a fourth year anthropology student at the University of Toronto. Her interest in health and society was solidified with a research trip to Namibia in 2005, where she explored the controversial convergence of sexually transmitted diseases and religion. Her project on faith-based responses to HIV/AIDS builds on her interest in cultural interpretations of illness, global inequalities, and community-based activism. She hopes to continue studying issues of reproductive heath in marginalized communities at the graduate level in a department of Anthropology or Public Health. Beyond academia, Nadia's other interests include traveling, rock climbing, environmentalism and trips home to Montreal.

2005-6

Alison Alexanian

Alison Alexanian is a third year philosophy major at the University of Toronto. She has special interests in 19th century German philosophy, ethics, and Christian art and history, and plans to pursue studies in one or more of these areas in graduate school. Alison will be studying at the University of Bonn March 2006, with the hopes of ameliorating her beginner's German. She is fluent in both French and Persian and would like to continue adding to her breadth of languages. She is an in-the-closet environmentalist and believes George Carlin and Pink Floyd are the saving graces of humanity. Outside of school, Alison devotes her time to drawing, painting, and belting out embarrassingly inaccurate renditions of her favourite pop songs.

Giruthiga Kuganantharajah

Giruthiga Kuganantharajah is an undergraduate student at the University of Toronto. She is now in her final year of study completing a Specialist in Bioethics with a Major in Human Biology and a Minor in Women’s Studies. Currently she is working on an Independent Study through the Philosophy Department looking at the philosophical foundations of Bioethics, and analyzing bioethic methodology. Giruthiga’s research interests are in bioethics, clinical ethics and public health, particularly in women’s issues and health care. She has goals to pursue graduate work in the areas of Public Health and Bioethics.

Outside her academics, Giruthiga has done variety of work in her community. She was the Volunteer Director as well as a classroom volunteer for Peace by PEACE, a not-for-profit organization, devoted to educating children about conflict resolution. She has also been an active executive member with the Victoria College Athletic Council and the Victoria Alumni Association.

His research interests include the effects of government policies on the environment and the implications of international trade regimes on development in industrializing and non-industrialized states.
