| Computer: | PC Pentium I or higher |
| Operating System: | MS Windows 95, 98 or Windows NT |
| Application package: | MS Office 2000 Standard (see details in Topic 8 "A Brief Description of Popular MS programs") |
| Internet Downloading | 1. MS Internet Explorer 4.01 with Service Pack 2 or 5.0
2. MS Global IME (Input Method Editor 5.01 with required Language Pack(s) |
An English version of Internet Explorer needs a specific MS Language Pack to display the Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other East Asian characters. A CJK Global IME will work only if their respective CJK language packs are also installed on your PC. So when you download MS Global IME from Internet, make sure to choose the option together with its Language Pack (see details in the next Topic 3 "Downloading CJK IME and Language Pack").
You can download the MS Global IME 5.01 with the Language Pack ONLY in MS Internet Explorer 4.0 or greater. If you are using the Netscape as your major Internet browser at the moment, you cannot use the Global IME but have to add another CJK add-on Platform as those described in Topic One.
Microsoft Office is based on the Unicode, a standard developed by the Unicode Consortium, that provides a 16-bit extensible international character coding system for information processing that covers the world's major languages.
b. In the "Choose a Language" field, choose "English" to read the following downloading instruction written in English. However, if you prefer to read the following instruction in CJK instead of English, choose "Other" and in the next Web page select the language version you prefer to download.
c. Click the Next>> button.
Note:
After the IME files have been downloaded and saved to your hard drive, and while you're still connected to the Internet, unzip and install the downloaded file (see the list below) by double-clicking the file name now located on your hard drive.
The following *.exe names might be displayed depending what you have downloaded:
| scmondo.exe | Global IME 5.01 for Chinese (Simplified) - with Language pack |
|
tcmondo.exe |
Global IME 5.01 for Chinese (Traditional) - with Language pack (with Zhu-Yin IME and ChangJie IME) |
| jamondo.exe | Global IME 5.01 for Japanese - with Language Pack |
| komondo.exe | Global IME 5.01 for Korean - with Language Pack |
You will see the following names if you chose to download Global IME without required language packs. Since Global IME will work fully with its required Language Pack, you should go back to download the options with Language Pack. It will not hurt anything, but the downloading procedure may take longer.
| msscaime.exe | Global IME 5.01 for Chinese (Simplified) |
| mstcaime.exe | Global IME 5.01 for Chinese (Traditional) |
| msjaime.exe | Global IME 5.01 for Japanese |
| mshaime.exe | Global IME 5.01 for Korean |
After double-click on the downloaded Global IME to unzip and install the .exe file,
If you don't have a zip program on your hard drive to unzip and install a downloaded program (which are generally zipped for purpose of transporting and downloading over Internet), You may download a free evaluation version of WinZip 7 from http://www.winzip.com as a temporary arrangement.
Generally, the installed CJK Global IME with a specific Language Pack will detect the language of the Web text and display it correctly after the Web file is fully loaded. This is one of the reasons why Microsoft Internet Explorer has become a major Internet browser for those viewers who need to read without buying additional add-on CJK programs.
If the CJK text is garbled somehow, make sure the following options are selected to help assure the correct display of CJK characters in the MS IE 5.0 Web pages:
Generally, your CJK Web text should be displayed correctly, especially after you restart your computer again.
If you wish to write and publish CJK text in a HTML file and publish your own Web page, MS Global IME will enable you to do so. See more details of writing CJK in Topic 7 "Writing and Printing CJK in Microsoft Applications.
MS Outlook 2000 combines electronic mail (called Outlook Express), calendars, contacts, tasks, to-do list, group scheduling, network and Web scheduling features. Its multilingual feature let users share more than 80 languages other than English. After installing the Global IME of CJK, you can view and write CJK e-mail messages in English based Outlook Express.
Microsoft Outlook is set to display the message header in English (which includes the From, To, Sent, and Subject boxes) of replies and messages to be forwarded. This is necessary because a CJK header may not be displayed properly if the recipient of the message is using a non-CJK system. (However, you can change the English header to a CJK header by clearing the check box with "Use English for message headers on replies and forwards in the Tools - Options - Mail Format Tab check box.)
Click in the body of the email message that contains CJK text. The CJK text should be displayed properly. To give the computer some time to display all the CJK characters properly, you may have to wait for 5-10 seconds, or click back and forth between email messages to help.
Your email message format must be in HTML to use the Global IME. When you reply to the message, it is sent in the same character set as the original. If you change the character setting in your reply, the original does not appear properly unless you send the message in HTML and the receiver's email program can read HTML.
choose Tools - Options from the Outlook Express' menu bar. Select Send tab in the Options window. In the Mail Send area, choose HTML format.
Also in the Sending area, click on International Settings and choose the preferred CJK language as the formatting coding for your sent email messages. Otherwise, you may be prompted about the format when sending a CJK email message.
You could write CJK text directly into Microsoft Word 2000 and Outlook Express 5 for email messages. You can also copy the written CJK from Word into other MS 2000 application packages such as Excel 2000, PowerPoint 2000 and others.
As the Chinese, Japanese and Korean Languages have their own particular input method, we have to use one, for example, the Simplified Chinese Global IME as an illustration of writing and printing CJK text. Example of Entering Chinese Simplified Text
Place cursor in the edit area of your file for writing CJK text, click on the En icon (Global IME) on your Windows' Task bar and choose Simplified Chinese in the IME menu. A floating toolbar should appear in your desktop as below.

From left to right in the floating toolbar,
To configure Chinese (Simplified) input system, right-click on the Pen icon next to the Chinese PinYin icon on the task bar ( see the example below) to bring up the Properties dialog box. Select Method of Inputting from the pop-up menu.
![]()
There are four input mode options in the Method of Inputting dialog box. Click to select all the four options to help in your entering of Simplified Chinese text.
| 1. Word Auto-Complete: | Recognizes and completes the character from the input of a consonant which can reduce the number of keystrokes required. |
| 2. South Fuzzy Pronunciation Input: | Allows the input of words with "fuzzy" pronunciation. |
| 3. Step-by-step Prompting: | Displays characters with the same syllables in a suggestion window so you can correct words as you type. |
| 4. Word Learning: | The IME learns from past user selections and corrections to provide the desired characters. |
To switch back to your normal English based inputting method, just click on the En icon on the Windows' Task bar again and choose English as you next input Method.
Once you have installed the Chinese (Simplified) Language Pack, you should be able to print CJK text correctly on laser printers with postscript drives. Some printer drivers, especially those of ink-jet (also called bubble-jet) printers, do not support printing CJK text. Owners of these printers have to contact their printer manufacturers for adding a supporting driver in the future.
The "MS Office 2000 Multi-language Pack"(Chinese, Japanese and Korean) were designed specifically for Office 2000. They will provide the translated text for the CJK user interface and Help for all Office programs. The Multi-Language Pack also includes the Microsoft Office 2000 Proofing Tools such as AutoCorrect, Spelling and Grammar Checkers, Thesaurus, etc. The Office 2000 Multi-Language Pack is on their own CDs and have their own installer. To be able to use it, you have to buy the MS Multilanguage Pack for CJK CDs separately from MS Office 2000.
Its multilingual feature allows you to use English as message flags and message headers, but enter CJK text inside the body of an email message. For example, in the fields of "From", "Sent", "Date Format", "To", and "Subject Field", you use English for your CJK message content. It is useful when exchanging email messages across different languages to different countries.
Note: To use e-mail features in Outlook, you need an Internet service provider - for modem connection at home, or you need to be on a cabled network - on campus lab computers. An Internet service provider is a company that allows you to connect to its Internet host server, usually for a fee.
A spreadsheet and charts program that calculates numbers. Excel detects HTML format standards used for CJK languages. You can copy and paste CJK text written in Word 2000 into an Excel spreadsheet and print it.
A presentation graphic program that helps you enhances your presentation and points with power, graphic inserts, and slides shows. You could type CJK using the Global IME feature in Word 2000 first, and then copy and past the CJK text into a PowerPoint 2000 file for your presentation.
MS Office 2000 Professional version includes two more applications:
* Access 2000 as a database program besides the 4 basic applications under the Office Standard edition.
* Publisher 2000 that creates and lay out printed publications.
MS Operating Systems of Windows 95, 98 and Windows NT Workstation versions support multi-lingual features. To install and justify the multilingual features, use the Start - Settings - Control Panels - Add/Remove Programs, Internet Options, Keyboards and others. Be cautious with changing these operating system options by following installing instructions carefully.
MS Internet Explorer 5.0 is a major competitor against Netscape in the market of Internet browsers and other popular programs. IE 4.01 and greater supports the MS Global Input Method Editor for CJK languages.
