Summer Language StudiesThe Summer Program in Hong Kong Organized by UofT Woodsworth CollegeThis program is not only of interest to students majoring in East Asian Studies, Asia-Pacific Studies, History, Political Science or Business, but to anyone who wants to complete an elective course in an academically and culturally stimulating environment. Students can select courses from: Classical Chinese; Culture and Community in Reform-Era China; The History of Hong Kong; and, Special Topics in International Management. Classes are held at the University of Hong Kong from June 19 to July 13, 2000. Students will have until August 11, 2000, to submit final assignments. Field trips are an integral part of each course and while classes are scheduled from Monday to Thursday, field trips may occur on weekends.

Inter-University Program for Chinese language Studies at Tsinghua: Summer Intensive Program 2000The Inter-University Board for Chinese Language Studies (IUB) announces its 2000 Summer Intensive Program, located at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Applications are welcome from graduate and undergraduate students (in the US or abroad), unaffiliated students such as those between undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as established scholars in the field of Chinese Studies. The IUP pedagogy is designed for students whose native language is English or those who have received their higher education in English. Applicants must have completed the equivalent of at least two academic years of Chinese language studies in a high quality college-level program. Evidence of the intention to pursue further academic training and/or a future career involving China is also required. Attendance fees for the 2000 summer program are $4,200, and include tuition, housing, and emergency medical insurance. Financial aid for the Summer Intensive Program is not available through IUB, but students are encouraged to seek outsidesources of funding (Blakemore, FLAS, etc.). NYU IN NANJING, June 2-July 21 2000NYU in Nanjing's seven week program will combine classroom study of the Chinese language, history and culture with activities and excursions, including travels to Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai and Hangzhou, etc. NYU in Nanjing offers intensive Chinese language courses from Beginner through advanced levels, giving special attention to listening and speaking. The curriculum also offers Chinese cultural courses taught in English. All the courses are taught by NYU faculty and Nanjing University professors. Students take 8 credits (two courses). The host institution is Nanjing University. All the rooms have air conditioning and bathroom. Application deadline: Usually early March.

Yale Summer Foreign Language Institute 2000June 5 to July 28: The YSFLI offers intensive instruction in Elementary and Intermediate Modern Chinese and Beginning Japanese in its summer 2000 session. The 8-week program is equivalent to an Academic Year of instruction. Classes meet four hours a day, five days per week. The program also offers Japanese for Reading for graduate students (2 hours a day, five days per week) using selected materials in the students' field of specialization.
