    David Chu Travelling scholarships

    Eligibility Criteria
    Must be:

    1. Accepted to the International Summer Program in Hong Kong (Group 1), or
    2. A senior undergraduate (3rd or 4th year) or graduate student who is undertaking research or study in the Asia-Pacific region (East and SE Asia) (Group 2).
      Please note: International students are not eligible. Financial need will be considered; academic merit may also be considered. Undergraduate students must demonstrate financial need by qualifying for OSAP assistance for the winter session in which the application is made. From the time of application to the time of conferral, it is assumed that the student's financial situation will remain unchanged. Submission of an application for this scholarship will authorize. Admissions and Awards to release OSAP information to the selection committee. Graduate students must demonstrate financial need either by qualifying for OSAP (see above) or by submitting a "Financial Needs Assessment Form."

    Applications
    Group 1: one-page letter indicating that student has applied/been accepted to the International Summer Program in Hong Kong
    Group 2:

    • One-page outline of travel plans, with breakdown of estimated costs
    • One-page letter of support from a University of Toronto faculty member, indicating the relevance of the travel plans to the student's program at U of T.

    Applications for both groups must include the applicant's student number and Social Insurance Number.

    Grants to Study in Hong Kong: Dr. Standley Ho Scholarships, Doris Lau Scholarships

    Approximately 40 grants from $500 to full funding are available to students in the UofT Summer Program in Hong Kong. Awards are open to undergraduate degree students in any year and in any program Recipients must have at least a C average and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to UofT students. Applicants from other universities are considered. Participants in the Summer Program in Hong Kong study regular UofT undergraduate degree credit courses, relevant to Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region, for 4 weeks at the University of Hong Kong.

    Faculty of Arts and Science, Scholarships and Financial Aid

    In April 1998, the Governing Council of the University of Toronto approved a new Policy on Student Financial Support. The Policy states, as a fundamental principle, that "no student admitted to a program at the University should be unable to enter or complete the program due to lack of financial means." The University of Toronto is unique among Canadian universities in providing this assurance of financial support, and in promising that students will have access to financial counseling.

    Zhonghua Scholarship Program (ZSP) 2000

    Learning Chinese, Teaching English, and Traveling in China

    The scholarship is established by WCCEC and educational institutions in China in 1994, the Zhonghua Scholarship Program (ZSP) is a unique international exchange program that combines study abroad, teaching EFL and cultural education. Each year, an average of 16 native speakers of English (USA, Australia, Canada and U.K.) are accepted to participate in the ZSP, ranging form Sophomore to MA degree holders. A list of past participants will be provided to applicants whose application materials are complete

    Benefits and Responsibilities:

    • All travel expenses (round trip between pint of departure and school in China)
    • Room and board (single occupancy in shared apartment with modern facilities)
    • 8 hrs/week of one-to-one Chinese study under the Personal Tutorial System
    • 10-15 hrs/week of English teaching to K-12 students
    • A paid cultural tour (about one-week) at the end of the program
    • A paid winter vacation (about 3 weeks) around Chinese New Year
    • Medical insurance (NOT covering hospitalization and major surgery)
    • Monthly stipend (2,000 Yuan or more, about the salary of a professor in China)

    This scholarship is set by the Chinese government on the basis of the bilateral or educational program of China and other countries. It can be further developed into two types: full scholarship and partial scholarship:

    • Full Scholarship: Tuition, Medical Care, Learning Material, Lodging, Living Allowance
    • Partial Scholarship: One or some items of the full scholarship listed above.

    Program Scholarship

    1. "Great Wall Scholarship" is for the candidates recommended by the UNESCO.
    2. "HSK Winner Scholarship Program" is for the students with excellent performance in HSK test.
    3. "Chinese Culture Research Fellowship" is for overseas scholars who are engaged in the study of Chinese culture.
    4. "Short-term Studies Scholarship Program for Foreign Teachers Teaching Chinese" is for overseas Chinese teachers.
    5. "Distinguished Foreign Students Scholarship" is for students with excellent performance both in conduct and study who have finished one level of study in China and continue a higher level study in China.

    Ways to Apply for the Scholarship

    1. Chinese Government Scholarship: The applicants shall apply to the competent authority of sending students to study abroad in their own country and be included in the exchange program. The Division of Foreign Studentís Affairs will process the application. Those who meet the requirements of the set standards are entitled to the Chinese government Scholarship.
    2. Program Scholarship:
      1. Great Wall Scholarship: Applicants can apply to the China Scholarship Council through the UNESCO.
      2. HSK Winner Scholarship Program: Applicants, after receiving the certificate of the Certificate of Chinese Proficiency Test, can direct apply to the China Scholarship Council or through the Chinese embassy.
      3. Chinese Culture Research Fellowship: Applicants can apply to the China Scholarship Council or through the Chinese embassy, Chinese institutions or professors. The China Scholarship Council has compiled the Name List for Academic Tutoring for reference.
      4. Short-term Studies Scholarship Program for Foreign Teachers Teaching Chinese: Applicants can apply to the China Scholarship Council through the recommendation of the Chinese Embassy.

    Canada-Taiwan Scholarships Program

    This program allows 5 Canadian university students to travel to Taiwan each year for Mandarin language training. The program is supported by the Government of Taiwan, through the Taipei Education and Cultural Office, and the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

    Fields of study: Mandarin language training

    Value: Tuition and monthly allowance. Selected candidates are personally responsible for all costs associated with their tavel to and from Taiwan.

    Number available: 5 for the 2000-2001 academic year

    Duration: 12 months
