Vasyl Kuchabsky
Western Ukraine in Conflict with Poland and Bolshevism, 1918–1923

Vasyl Kuchabsky’s book is the most comprehensive account of the political, military, and diplomatic aspects of the Western Ukrainian struggle for independence after the First World War. The central issues in his study are Ukrainian-Polish relations and the Ukrainian-Polish War of 1918–19. Kuchabsky also examines state-building in the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic and, to some extent, in the Ukrainian People’s Republic, within the broader context of European politics.

Батуринська старовина
(Baturyn Antiquity)

Baturyns'ka starovyna is the largest collection of articles published to date dedicated to the former capital of Hetman Ukraine, Baturyn. Essays by prominent scholars from Ukraine, Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, and Italy examine the town's origins, its development, and the zenith of its prosperity and significance during the time when it served as the capital of the Cossack state. In 1708, Baturyn became the centre of Hetman Ivan Mazepa's insurrection and was subsequently destroyed by Russian troops.

Mykhailo Hrushevsky
History of Ukraine-Rus'
volume 9, book 2, part 1: The Cossack Age, 1654–1657

The pivotal event in this volume of Hrushevsky's History of Ukraine-Rus' is the Pereiaslav Agreement of 1654, which brought Cossack Ukraine under a Muscovite protectorate. Other chapters trace the difficult course of Cossack Ukraine's relations with Muscovy in 1654-55. Unparalleled in breadth of research, Hrushevsky's work brings to life a turbulent and politically decisive period in the life of the Ukrainian people.

Ukrainian Drama and Theater in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries
Paulina Lewin

Written and performed during a time of political upheaval and fierce religious polemics, early modern Ukrainian plays both entertained their audiences and helped to educate and shape a national and religious identity. This rich body of serious dramas and comic intermedia was remarkable for the original ways it elaborated on and transformed the models of the European Renaissance and Baroque theater. Lewin’s book is the first English-language general history of that subject.

Гадяцька унія 1658 року
(The Union of Hadiach of 1658)

This book is a collection of articles written by prominent historians from Ukraine, Poland, North America, and Russia devoted to the pivotal event in the history of Cossack Ukraine: the Union of Hadiach of 1658. The Union of Hadiach was a direct alternative to the Pereiaslav Agreement of 1654, for it represented an effort on the part of the Cossack elite to legitimize the Cossack state as the sovereign Grand Duchy of Rus' in the political union with Poland-Lithuania.
