This is an bibliography of relatively recent literature
concerning economic cooperation and integration in the Middle
East. It is the result of three projects carried out at the
Centre for International Studies over past few years. The
first of these, supported by the CRB Foundation, was a general
survey of the literature carried out entirely in Toronto The
second emphasized the literature concerning the Israeli,
Jordanian and Palestinian economies; this was done in
collaboration with teams from the University of Jordan, the
Palestinian Academic Society for the Study of International
Affairs, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The third
study, which focussed on the literature concerning Egypt, was
undertaken in collaboration with a team from the Economic
Research Forum for the Arab Countries, Iran and Turkey in
Cairo. The second and third studies were funded by the
Canadian International Development Agency through a programme
administered by the International Development Research Centre
in Ottawa. Funding for mounting this work on the Internet
came from the same source.
In carrying out our studies we have received help from
many individuals, and it is perhaps invidious to mention only
a few of them. However, we do wish to mention special help,
for which we are extremely grateful, received from Professors
Linda Northrup, Professor Hadia Dajani-Shakeel and Ms Marion
Boulby, all of the Department of Middle East and Islamic
Studies of the University of Toronto; Mr. John Bradley
and Mr. Allen Forsyth of the Information Commons of the
Unversity of Toronto; and from Ms. Jill Tansley and Ms Eileen
ALms of the International Development Research Centre in
Ottawa. To these and to the many others who at one time or
another, in one way or another, helped with this project, we
extend our heartfelt thanks.
In the future we hope to be able to keep this data base
up to date, to add to it any items which have been overlooked,
and to annotate more of the works listed. We also hope to
undertake special projects on the literature concerning
Lebanon, Syria and Turkey in collaboration with teams from
these countries. We are currently seeking funding for this
work.
