Undergraduate Admission 2012-2013
Quicklinks
Any one of the three concentrations in Cinema Studies - Specialist, Major, or Minor - is intended to comprise part of a student's undergraduate Honours Bachelor of Arts 4-year degree.
Students taking Cinema Studies combine their program with disciplines ranging from Psychology to English; from Political Science to Art History. A well-rounded education with more career opportunities can result when students complement their chosen Cinema Studies Program with many of the other available courses of study available at the University.
Students registered in the Faculty of Arts and Science select their program of study at the end of their first year of study and/or after having completed at least four full course equivalents (FCEs). Transfer credits accepted for students coming to UofT from another university also count toward this FCE requirement.
Of these four courses required to request a Specialist, Major, or Minor in Cinema Studies, one must be INI115Y-'Introduction to Film Study.' This course is the entry requirement for all of the undergraduate areas of concentration in Cinema Studies and is also a prerequisite to most upper-year Cinema Studies courses.
Please read the following information carefully:
Cinema Studies has substantially revised its Program Requirements. The NEW requirements apply to students accepted and declaring a Specialist, Major or Minor during the 1st Subject POSt request period beginning in April 2011. Current program students will be "Grandfathered" under the previous requirements: Please see Cinema Studies under the listing for Innis College in the 2010-2011 Calendar (.pdf file)
i) How to Apply:
- Cinema Studies is a Type 2L Subject POSt and students use the SWS/ROSI to make their program request.
1st Round
April - May Request Period
- April through May: Students who applied during the First Round of Subject POSt Requests should check ROSI at the beginning of July to be advised of the decision on their application.
2nd Round
July - August Request Period
- July through August: Students who applied during the Second Round of Subject POSt Requests should check ROSI at the beginning of September to be advised of the decision on their application.
ii) Program Requirements:
Students accepted into a Cinema Studies Subject POSt as of the 1st Request Period must follow the NEW program requirements.
Cinema Studies is a Type 2 Limited enrolment program that can only accommodate a limited number of students. Enrolment in the Cinema Studies programs requires completion of INI115Y1 and three additional full or their equivalents. Admission will be determined by a student’s mark in INI115Y1 ‘Introduction to Film Study.’ It is expected that a final mark of at least 70% be required for admission in the coming cycle. Students can be considered for admission if they do not meet the minimum grade requirement in INI115Y1 by achieving a minimum grade of 70% in INI215Y1. Achieving this mark in either course does not necessarily guarantee admission to the program in any given year.
Please Note: BR (breadth requirements) ensure that your overall degree is well-rounded. QR (quantitative reasoning) fulfills specific required "competences." BR and QR are not the same thing, but INI228H fulfills both: Breadth requirement 3 and QR (competency 4).
