Research and Teaching:
Kay Armatage’s research focuses on women filmmakers, feminist theory, Canadian cinema and various aspects of international film festivals in books, film magazines and refereed journals. Her current research is on film festivals, with recent publications on open-air screenings and the Toronto International Women & Film Festival 1973, and an article in progress on environmental film festivals. She recently became smitten with opera, and her work in progress deals with the work of Barbara Willis Sweete, director of the Metropolitan Opera HD broadcasts. As an adjunct to academic work, she has also worked as an international programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival, 1983-2004, and served as Vice-Chair of the Ontario Arts Council, 1991-1997. She has also produced and directed documentary and experimental narrative films. She has taught a variety of film and women’s studies courses on women’s cinema, documentary film, film theory, popular culture, and international film festivals.
