MA in European, Russian and Eurasian Studies

The MA in European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (ERES) is a two-year interdisciplinary program. Students gain a firm grounding in a major discipline as it applies to the region, broaden their understanding by taking graduate courses in several other disciplines and do a substantial piece of original research. The program requires students to do course work on Europe, Russia and Eurasia, thereby fostering a comparative approach to the affairs of the countries throughout the region.

CERES cooperates with programs and centres in cognate fields such as East Asian Studies, International Studies, Jewish Studies, Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations, the Joint Initiative in German and European Studies, and the Institute of European Studies. Courses that overlap with CERES's area of focus may be credited toward the program requirements.

Program Requirements

  • Six full courses (or the equivalent)
  • One of the six courses is a required course.

    • A full-year, interdisciplinary graduate colloquium in European, Russian and Eurasian studies (ERE2000Y) is taken in the second year. ERE2000Y is organized around several key problems in the development and interrelations of the societies in the area; the course requires a major research paper.

  • The remaining five courses are taken from the graduate offerings of the participating departments. At least two of these courses must be drawn from the student's "major" discipline. The remaining courses must be drawn from at least two other disciplines.
  • Reading competence must be demonstrated by no later than the beginning of the second year of the program in one of the region's languages, pertinent to the research undertaken by the student for the major research paper.
