MA in European, Russian and Eurasian and Studies/Juris Doctor Program in Law

The Combined Program in ERES/JD provides specialized professional training for those seeking a career in law in the changing environment of the post-communist world. Canadian and other western firms selling or manufacturing in the region need the services of well-informed specialists who can navigate the legal pitfalls of emergent legal systems and deal with lawyers and goverment officials in the area. Best equipped to meet this demand are people with dual expertise in Law and European, Russian and Eurasian Studies.

MA REES/JD Students can receive a combined degree in Law and European, Russian and Eurasian Studies in four years of academic study instead of the five years that would be required to receive the two degree separately.

Program Requirements

Year 1 of the MA ERES/JD is the mandatory first year program of the JD.

In the following years, students must meet the following requirements:

  • ten half courses (or the equivalent) in ERES: at least four in the major field and three in the two minor fields, leaving 1.5 courses for the required first-year gateway introductory seminar, ERE2001H-F, and the second-year research seminar, ERE2000Y; four of the ten half courses must be taken during the second year;
  • two half courses where the student chooses;
  • reading competence must be demonstrated before the beginning of the final year in one of the region's languages, pertinent to the research undertaken by the student for the major research paper in ERE2000Y.
