Research and Teaching Resources

University of Toronto Library

University of Toronto Library's holdings covering the area of Central and Eastern Europe have grown to approximately 400,000 volumes. Slavic librarians, collection development staff, and teaching faculty work closely together to ensure that resource coverage of the area directly supports Masters and Doctoral level study in most subjects relating to the Central and East European field in Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Petro Jacyk Central and East European Resource Centre

In March 1995, the University Library opened the Petro Jacyk Central and East European Resource Centre (PJRC). Named after the late Toronto philanthropist who donated the funds needed to initiate it, the PJRC serves the research needs of students, faculty and scholars at CERES, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, the Ukrainian Chair, the Polish History Chair, the Hungarian Chair, the Estonian Chair, and the Finnish Studies Program. Scholars affiliated with many other adjunct programs such as Medieval Studies, Cinema Studies, Jewish Studies, and Music frequently also use these facilities. The Resource Centre is open to visiting scholars and the general public.

In addition to housing approximately 1500 reference books, the PJRC has over 70 newspapers in the languages of Central and Eastern Europe. The emphasis is on up-to-date information. The collection is strictly reference only and non-circulating. Reading desks and Xerox facilities are available on the premises. The staff can provide instruction on how to find books and journals in the University Library by using UTCat, the library's online catalogue. If material is not in the library, the staff will advise you where it may be found. Special library orientation tours, training sessions on library resources and databases, and research consultations can be arranged in person or by telephone through the PJRC Reference Desk: (416) 978-0588; website: http://pjrc.library.utoronto.ca/.
