MA Program in European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies
Table of contents: handbook.htm
Admission
Applications for admission to graduate programs are examined by an Admissions Committee. Candidates
are accepted under the general regulations of the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) of the University of
Toronto. Applicants must hold a four-year BA, or its equivalent. Successful applicants will be expected to
have attained an academic average of B+ or better in their most recent year of undergraduate work. Normally,
they will be expected to have completed several undergraduate courses in the European, Russian, and Eurasian area
and the equivalent of two academic years of study in a relevant language. Those with only one year of
language study may be admitted on condition that they undertake additional language training in the summer
preceding entry into the program. These are minimum requirements and do not guarantee admission. In addition, applicants must submit to CERES a sample of their written work (e.g., an essay written for a
previous course) and a statement of purpose. The statement of purpose should be up to 500 words long and
should outline the student’s interest in the region. It should state clearly the specific fields
s/he intends to study while at the Centre, as well as discuss the relationship between long-term goals and
academic study.
Foreign students should make arrangements to demonstrate their English language proficiency by taking
the TOEFL test.
NB: Applicants who wish to be considered for the University of Toronto
Fellowship must ensure that their applications and supporting documents are delivered to the
Centre by January 31.
In general, students who are interested in applying for admission are strongly encouraged to contact
CERES early in the autumn of the year before they plan to begin their studies.
Applications must be submitted to the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) through the online admissions application (https://apply.sgs.utoronto.ca). For more details on the admission procedure please go to www.utoronto.ca/ceres/prospective.html#procedure
If you require assistance, please contact Jana Oldfield at jana.oldfield@utoronto.ca
or (416) 946-8938.
Only those applications received before January 31 will automatically be included in the funding competition (this competition is based on academic merit and includes visa students). Applications received after January 31 will be considered for "admission with no funding" only.
