Paul Robert Magocsi (Chair of Ukrainian Studies, University of Toronto), “The Ukrainian Diaspora, or Diasporas from Ukraine?”

What is the “Ukrainian” Diaspora? Who is part of the diaspora? A look at the surprising diversity of the people who left Ukraine: Who are they? Why did they leave? Where have they gone? What are their ties to Ukraine? Professor Magocsi is a renowned scholar and the author of nearly 700 publications (including 30 books) on topics of central and eastern European history and national identity. A selection of his publications will be displayed during the lecture.

Co-directors Thomas Lahusen, Tracy McDonald and Alexander Gershtein will present two films The Province of Lost Film and The Photographer during KinoArt Festival at UofTs Slavic Department (121 St. Joseph Street).
The Province of Lost Film is a film about employees of the former distribution and exhibition network, projectionists, and viewers from central Russia who reflect upon the unique and already bygone experience of the Soviet experiment of cinefication, which sought to bring the screen to every corner of the Soviet Union.
The Photographer is a film about Riazan photographer Evgeny Kashirin (1949-2007) and a triptych about a dying rural life, a train that crawls from town to town, and the story of a man who traded his wife for a marble statue of Judith.

Frank Bialystok is a professor of Modern Jewish History at the University of Toronto and York University and a founder of the Polish-Jewish Heritage Foundation. During a recent visit to Poland, he spoke with graduate students and young faculty members about Poles and Jews, World War II and the Holocaust, and myth, memory and history.
Following the talk Professor Bialystok will moderate the round table discussion on the same topics with participation of local students representing the Polish Students' Association and the Jewish students' organization Hillel at the University of Toronto.
