Prof. Jiyuan Liu is a geographer and a scientist engaged in the research works on resources and environmental remote sensing and geo-information science. He is director general of Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR) of Chinese of Academy Sciences (CAS). He was born in the city of Shanghai in May 1947 and graduated from CAS and obtained master degree of Cartography and Remote Sensing in 1981. From the early of 1980s, he has presided at and completed several key national projects on construction of resources and environment information system, such as “Remote Sensing Investigation of Land Use in Tibet”, “Macro Investigation and Dynamic Analysis of National Resources and Environment Based on Remote Sensing”, “Construction of dynamic information service system of national fundamental resources and environment based on remote sensing”, and the key project on knowledge innovation of CAS, “Spatio-temporal information analysis of national land environment by remote sensing”. He has developed several multiple thematic analysis models. On the basis of his research achievement of land resources and natural environment of China, he put forward a series of important research conclusions and propositions. He has been awarded several prizes, such as the second prize and third prize for national scientific and technical progress, first prize of scientific and technical progress of CAS, first prizes of scientific and technical progress of national ministries. He is the vice-president of China Society of Geography, the vice-president of China Society of Natural Resources, the executive member of China National Committee for IGBP, the member of Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee of State Environment Protection Administration of China, and the member of the scientific committee of National Remote Sensing Center of China.

The research projects that he is presiding currently include:

  1. Integrated Ecosystem Assessment of Western China, a sub-global project of MA (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment);
  2. Spatial-temporal Pattern and Evolution Mechanism of Modern Processes of Land Use in the Western China, a key project funded by the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC);
  3. A Study on the Carbon Cycle of Terrestrial Ecosystem and Driving Forces in China, a key project of 973 Scientific Program of Chinese government.
