Comments from past Starting Well participants:

" offers a safe place to be nourished, valued and challenged. It contains practical information and valuable opportunities for sharing what works and what doesn't."

"...important for new ministers to share and be recipients of each other's wisdom, stop being 'in charge' and learn, open self for rest..."

"Good to get together with colleagues and to have facilitators who have experience in ministry and wisdom to share."

"...realize that you're not alone..."

Monday, June 11th at 9 am - Thursday, June 14th at 3 pm, 2012

at Toronto School of Theology , 47 Queen's Park Cres. East, Toronto ON (University of Toronto)

Facilitated by The Rev. Dr. Malcolm Sinclair and The Rev. Dr. Karen Bach

Starting Well offers new clergy, diaconal ministers and designated lay ministers opportunities to reflect on their context and practice of ministry in an affirming environment.

Come and participate in small and large group discussions and seminars, personal reflection, worship, and examination of case studies prepared by participants from their current ministries.

Join us and build supportive relationships, experience a cumulative learning community and be rejuvenated!

We are going to focus in 2012 on Finding Balance in Ministry.

This event is open to those ordained or commissioned in the last 4 years and to those who participated in Starting Well for the first time in 2009 or later.

Toronto Leadership Team

Malcolm Sinclair is a native of Toronto and has served all four of his churches in that city over forty-two years. He has worked in a lean, old neighbourhood church, a cozy suburban enclave, midtown, in a church of causes and crusades, and downtown in a church with all the bells and whistles. Noted as a preacher he has also traveled widely as a guest. Ordained in 1970, Malcolm Sinclair completed a Doctor of MInistry degree in 1986 at Drew University, and was awarded and Doctor of Divinity degree (honoris causa) from Emmanuel College in 1997. He is a Past-President of the St Andrew`s Society of Toronto, and is a Captain in, and Padre to, the 78th Fraser Highlanders (York Garrison).

Until her recent retirement, Karen Bach was the Mission Program/Ministry Officer at Yonge Street Mission. Previously, for seven and a half years, Karen was the Director of Yonge Street Mission’s Evergreen Centre overseeing the delivery of a complete range of services to street-involved young people. Karen spent almost 12 years as a chaplain at the University of Toronto working for the Presbyterian and United Churches. During her time on campus she helped to provide leadership to the first ‘Starting Well’ programs and assisted Knox in the teaching about clergy sexual abuse. Karen has been an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church in Canada since September 1990. Recently Karen was honoured by Knox College with an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree.

This event is sponsored by Emmanuel College, Knox College and denominational staff of the Presbyterian Church in Canada and the United Church of Canada, with the generous support of the Beatty Ryckman Trust.
