Saving the Eyes of Children
Retinoblastoma is an aggressive form of eye cancer
that strikes children during the first three years of life.
Until recently, a cure often meant the loss of one or
both eyes. Dr. Gallie's group successfully developed
a diagnostic procedure that allows babies to be tested
in the womb, so that treatment can begin long before
tumors are large enough to threaten vision.
The Medical Research Council honored Dr. Gallie
as a Distinguished Scientist in 1997, one of only
six in Canada.
