ALL ABORIGINAL STUDIES COURSE EXPECTATIONS:
Students in Aboriginal Studies courses are expected to participate actively in class discussions, contribute discussion questions for the class to consider and, in upper level courses, to lead class sessions as assigned.
Effective participation in class requires preparation (readings, assignments completed on time, etc.) and regular attendance.
Students are expected to be present in class on a weekly basis.
Regular attendance and participation enhances the learning environment of all participants.
Note that the participation component of the course grade is based on regular attendance and participation in class on a regular basis.
The PARTICIPATION MARK includes the following components:
Regular attendance:
Attends class
Arrives on time
Remains until class is completed
Notifies instructor in advance if unable to attend class due to illness
CONTRIBUTIONS IN CLASS:
Consistently prepares for class by completing course readings and reflecting on issues that might be shared with the community of learners contributions are thoughtful, thought-provoking, challenging and supportive demonstrates a consistent ability to synthesize research knowledge and practice knowledge and apply it appropriately; enhances group process.
DECORUM:
Demonstrates respect to peers, faculty and guests by contributing to a safe and sound environment that is conducive to learning.
Engages in balanced participation in class, challenges respectfully, including e-mail communications, advocates for change as needed and effectively, and respects confidentiality.
GRADING OF WRITTEN PAPERS:
All written assignments are subject to the grading regulations as outlined in the Faculty of Arts and Science calendar.
All Late assignments are subject to a penalty deduction, as specified by the instructor .
Assignments are due in at the beginning of class on the assigned date, or as announced in advance by the course instructor.
Assignments handed in late will receive a penalty, to be determined in advance by the instructor.
Students are also responsible for requesting in writing, at least two days prior to the due date, an extension for exceptional circumstances.
Extensions granted will identify a new due date.
Students must make requests for extensions in writing, via email.
The email should include the full name of the student, the student number, the assignment for which an extension is requested, and a reason for the request.
Documentation may be requested (e.g., a doctor’s note).
TESTS:
Students are expected to write tests during the scheduled class time.
Students who miss a term test will be assigned a mark of zero for that test unless they miss the test for reasons entirely beyond their control and submit to the instructor a written request for special consideration explaining the reason for missing the test and attaching appropriate documentation (e.g. a medical certificate or your college registrar’s note).
If the explanation is accepted, the instructor may chose to give a make-up test or increase the weighting of other graded work by the amount of the missed test.
It should not be taken for granted that a make-up test will be given.
If the explanation is not accepted, the student receives a grade of zero on that piece of work.
Notification of a missed test must be given in writing within one week of the missed test.
Notification must include the full name of the student, a brief explanation of why the test was missed,and a plan for how the work can be made up.
ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES:
Many students write their tests through Accessibility Services.
For students who make use of Accessibility Services, it is the STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY to notify Accessibility Services well in advance of a scheduled test that they will be writing through there.
In approaching Accessibility Services, they will need the full name, student number, course number and title, and scheduled date of the test.
Ideally you should register with Accessibility Services at the beginning of the academic year to avoid any delays in the service.
