The University of Toronto offers a variety of science and research-related activities and camps for primary and high school students.

Let’s Talk Science is a national charitable organization committed to building youth interest and engagement in science, engineering and technology. It is run out of 36 university and college campuses across the country. At the U of T St. George campus, we mobilize graduate student volunteers studying science, engineering and technology to do hands-on/minds-on science activities with children and youth.

Girls' Science & Engineering Saturdays was created to encourage and inspire girls in grades 3 through 12 to explore their interests in science, engineering and technology in a comfortable, confidence-inspiring, all-female environment. Offered at the University’s St. George campus in the Fall and Winter, each Saturday session promises fun hands-on, discovery-based science and engineering activities.

Saturday Science & Engineering Academy is the University’s advanced academic program for students in grades 5 to 12 who have a desire to explore science, math and technology in challenging and creative ways. SSEA exposes students to concepts and topics beyond the regular school curriculum in a fun hands-on environment.

The Physics Outreach Program and Physics Olympiad Preparation Program (POPTOR) provides the opportunity for high school students in grades 10 – 12 to visit the research groups of the Department of Physics, talk to our professors and PhD students, and perform experiments that our undergraduate students do in their 1st and 2nd year. Students can also participate in a Camp and selection exams in early May to become a Canadian National Physics team member in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO). Students meet our former POPTOR participants - winners of prizes and awards at the International Physics Olympiad.

On the evening of the first Thursday of each month in downtown Toronto, we give you an hour with a young researcher, followed by planetarium shows and free observing through our telescopes.

The Operations Research Challenge (TORCH) is a one-day contest where teams of 3-4 high school students have to solve 5 to 10 problems related to different application areas of operations research. Operations research is a field of study that uses techniques from engineering, computer science and mathematics to understand and solve complex decision-making problems. The 2012 contest included questions related to the Olympics as well as optimization of decisions in the game of Starcraft, among others. Students also listen to a lecture by a faculty member introducing them to the field more formally.

The International Math Kangaroo Competition is a 60 minute, multiple choice contest open to anyone in Grades 2–12. It takes place each year in the spring.

Science Rendezvous
Science Rendezvous is an all day, National Science festival that takes place in May. Both the St. George and UTM campuses have participated in this event, presenting exciting demonstrations, hands-on activities and experiments.

The University of Toronto National Biology Competition provides students with an opportunity to test their knowledge and understanding of biology. All secondary school students are welcome to participate. Top students receive certificates designating them as National Biology Scholars and are eligible to receive cash prizes.
