World Class Faculty

Maydianne Andrade

Meet biology professor and Canada Research Chair Maydianne Andrade – U of T’s spiderwoman. Andrade teaches in the Biodiversity, Ecology and Evolution Specialist (BEES) Program at UTSC where theoretical training combines with hands-on experience to help students understand how ecology and evolution shape species, communities and ecosystems. Andrade’s research into the behavioural ecology of invertebrates focuses on the reproductive tactics and mating rituals of black widow spiders.

Engaged In The Global Community

Robert Austin

Robert Austin teaches the politics and history of Central Europe and the Balkans and coordinates the European Studies Program at CERES in the Munk School of Global Affairs, where he makes the field the class and encourages students to gain international experience. Austin has led undergraduate and graduate student field trips to Albania, Austria, Bosnia, Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia. Every summer, he also teaches two U of T Summer Abroad Programs - one in Brno, Czech Republic where students study Central Europe and the other based in Graz, Austria which focuses on the transformation of the Balkans.

Just back from their most recent round of research in Chennai (Tamil Nadu), they are at home in the temples, archives, streets and among the peoples of India, Burma and Nepal (pictured with their daughter Emilia).

Ideas That Shape The World

Bob Orr, Peter Krieger, David Bailey, Pekka Sinervo Bac, Chav Chhiv Chau, Joe Taenzer, Jeff Asaf Dror, Garrin McGoldrick, Santiago Batista

The University of Toronto has one of Canada’s most active groups in elementary particle physics and relativity. Not sure what the Z boson physics program at CERN or the high energy tests at the Tevatron are all about? Meet some of the experimentalists and theorists at the University of Toronto seeking to move beyond the current particle physics paradigm. http://www.physics.utoronto.ca/

Vibrant Student Life

Shirley Mpagi

Meet Shirley Mpagi a student in the University of Toronto Mississauga-Sheridan program and one of the artists chosen to participate in the Chancellor’s Student Art show (seen here with some of her work).  UTM offers undergraduate students a range of programs emphasizing the fields of art and art history (specialist, major), art history (specialist, major, minor), visual culture and communication (specialist), and cinema studies (minor). The successful joint program in Art and Art History with Sheridan Institute is now in its fifth decade and it is the longest running collaboration of its kind.

Unlimited Learning

P.J. Carefoote

P.J. Carefoote with a ca. 1226 manuscript, the Biblia latina. Carefoote is a librarian at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library where he is responsible for medieval manuscripts and early books. A theologian by training, his other professional interests include the role of the book in the Reformation, the evolution of the English Bible, and the role of literary censorship in the development of Western Society.

All members of the University of Toronto community as well as the public are welcome to use the library and its collections.

The U of T library system is comprised of 44 individual libraries that hold more than 12 million volumes in 128 languages; 93,000 serial titles; and over 28,000 linear metres of archival material. It is the third-largest academic library in North America following the Harvard University and Yale University libraries.

Unlimited Learning

Brendan Frey, Weijun Gao, Hui Xiong and Leo Lee

University of Toronto professor Brendan Frey discusses the genetic codes discovered using a machine learning algorithm developed by students and research associates Weijun Gao, Hui Xiong and Leo Lee.

Frey's group develops new computational tools and theoretical frameworks for analyzing large-scale data sets, with applications in molecular biology, computer vision, and sensory processing. His research focuses on introducing algorithms that reveal hidden variables and efficiently take into account the structural knowledge that is critical in most real-world applications—from automatically recognizing someone's handwriting, to discovering aberrant DNA patterns in the human genome that account for disease.
